If you feel the daily news is worth your time, read a physical newspaper like me. I quit like the key-binds & fine grain tuning for every individual utility program I use. Not to mention - Reddit, TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts & the million other TikTok clones that rob you of your time for a shot of dopamine, I don’t use any of that. Honestly, they’re probably not worth your time. I block any news site, whether they’re publishing clickbaity articles or not. Anyhow these are similar to newsboat as in they’re minimal, lightweight & adhere to the UNIX philosophy. With RSS - things are much simpler, just one place to hunt for new content. Emailing articles so it can be piped into an RSS feed using some other scripts. For sites that don’t have an RSS feed? Currently my newsboat feed is populated with indie sites, blogs, wiki pages, updates to documentation & new software releases, podcasts, YouTube channels, WordPress sites, Telegram Channels, Odysee / LBRY channels, SoundCloud , Bandcamp, Pixelfed, Mastodon & other Fediverse feeds.
Or newsboat a TUI tool with familiar key bindings. My browser is no longer a tool I use for entertainment i.e. binging stuff. JS sites in my browser - more on that later. Feel free to add more sites. Whenever I find something interesting, I add it to my local RSS feed, then checkout the articles, videos / photos using w3m, mpv & imv. If you’re feeling brave try blocking sites forever - on your local router / computer. But if you’re interested checkout this tool. It proves to be a very powerful tool. I’m using a Firefox based browser - for it’s top notch content blocking extension support. After I’m exhausted with my buffer of videos - offline, video shorts with no more videos to watch - you’d stick to your allotted time. Enough spending time on your screen. Web browsers used to have native RSS integration a couple of years ago but unfortunately today - it’s a thing of the past. It’s just a random freeze frame from the video. I don’t wander on Twitch or play video games. I don’t do this.
Things that I’ve blocked don’t load. I don’t use my phone much - more on that here. Use any client you wish to. P.S. Use proxies like - html2rss, Kill The Newsletter! Maybe use the Tor Browser for these? Why get distracted by countless articles that are recommended to you should you read an article using your web browser. Take back the web! “Fastfood chains, retail stores, makeup, merch, fandom wikis, subreddits, fanclubs, celeb news, gossip sites, product reviews, games, internet events, digital concerts, comics, movie reviews, over-hyped packaged goodies” fed to web lurking consumers. This includes the other forms of media in the form of TVs, internet consoles & Smart Home Assistants err.. BigTech & internet addiction together. BigTech conglomerates like Google, Amazon, Facebook & other mainstream social media & other news sites. We all know that the Mainstream Media flavours articles with propaganda, fake news - to engage readers. The news you consume isn’t going to affect you in any way. But let’s not limit ourselves to news or spam sites.
