YouTube Adds new Vertical Video Conversion Elements as it Leans into Short Form Video
YouTube says that option is currently available for App campaigns, and will be coming soon to Video action and Performance Max campaigns. Worth noting, while YouTube also says that, in early experiments, creators have seen ‘a modest improvement’ to views and watch time as a result of this formatting change. While at the same time, YouTube’s also experimenting with ways to push even more ads into clips. The multi-device Bluetooth setup is wonderfully useful if you use a tablet or smartphone around the home a lot, as you can connect those up to the speakers and make use of them even when you’re not at your laptop or desktop PC. It comes with a peel-away instruction sticker, but guests to your home will have no idea how to turn the volume up or down. As you can see in the right-hand side image above, YouTube will now present vertical clips without the black bars, creating more consistency in-stream. The simplified templates provide another way to create YouTube ads based on engaging presentation styles. The maximum volume is formidable (enough to provide the background music for a small house-party or office event), without distortion or clipping when turned all the way up. YouTube’s also added some additional, auto-generated ad templates, which provide a way to create vertical videos based on text and image inputs. And even further aligning with the vertical video shift, YouTube is also updating the presentation style of vertical video thumbnails in the app, to make vertical clips look better in-stream. For music, movies, YouTube shows or gaming, it sounded rich and clear - enough to justify the Z600 on that point alone, even if it didn’t have the neat multi-device feature. YouTube has said that these ‘bumper’ ads are only 6-seconds long, at max, so the imposition shouldn’t be significant. That could make it easier for marketers to align with usage trends, and in particular, YouTube Shorts, which has seen a big jump in usage this year. Short-form video is the trend of the moment, and this could make it much easier for brands to align with that shift, with minimal editing effort.

As you can see in this example, the process will match up the presentation display based on how each person is engaging with content, creating a more organic, streamlined experience. Better presentation options, aligned with emerging trends. YouTube’s looking to help advertisers align with evolving video consumption trends by testing out a new process that automatically reformats landscape video ads into square or vertical playback, relative to how each user is consuming content. But still, I would question the effectiveness of ads that are jammed into these clusters, which users are likely tuning out very quickly. At the base, the downward-facing drivers are unprotected but for a thin piece of cardboard on each. Though traditional in function, the Z600 speakers are modern in form. Connecting via Bluetooth is simple - hold the ‘connect’ button on the speakers for a second or two, then find and pair to the Z600 from your device. The same source material played over the 3.5mm analogue connection sounded indistinguishable when played over Bluetooth instead. If those devices support A2DP (as above, the included USB adapter does), you can quickly switch from one source to another just by stopping the audio playback on the current device, and starting playback on another.
From good-quality source material, sound is clear throughout the range, with gently but distinctly reverberative bass and no noticeable tinniness at the top end. Unwieldy speaker cabling detracts from this wireless system, but sound quality, ease-of-use and attractive design outweigh that single negative. Sound quality did not seem to be lost over Bluetooth - there was none of those characteristic ‘Bluetooth headset’ compression artefacts or distortions introduced. The Z600 will stay paired to up to three Bluetooth devices at once. Logitech’s Z600 speaker system does have Bluetooth support, but don’t confuse it with the portable ‘Bluetooth speaker’ devices that have cropped up in the last year or two, aimed solely at smartphones and tablets. Being able to stay paired with three devices at once was truly useful - we had it setup with laptop, tablet and smartphone, frequently switching between the three. Great for the home or office. On the right-hand speaker, this stripe is home to the controls and inputs. Instead of buttons, the volume is set by moving your finger on the top of the right-hand speaker, either clockwise (volume up) or anticlockwise (volume down). The top of each speaker is a disc of the same purple plastic.
