Creators Say YouTube Shorts has a Transphobia Problem

The event featured main stage performances and public meet and greets by YouTube creators. The event included the introduction of The Next Big YouTuber contest. Recently Jessie Earl, a trans YouTube creator, has been vocal about YouTube flagging a video critiquing anti-trans comments from YouTuber Matt Walsh. He briefly relocated to Los Angeles while filming Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014) but returned to Philadelphia upon completion of the movie. The release of the film in 2014 coincided with the 31st anniversary of the 1983 video game crash. YouTube is high on the success of YouTube Shorts, a short-form video offering they introduced in September 2020 to compete with TikTok. The Roberts brothers grew up making home videos but Kid History-the flagship series on BoredShortsTV-was not created until after their success in a video competition. The stories are acted out by the brothers using the voices of the children. The channel is best known for its Kid History series where each episode has a group of children tell a true story from the Roberts brothers' lives.


Kid History was followed by other series including: Kid Snippets, Autocorrect Awareness, and Kid Movie Trailers. The feud took place over several videos between 2008 and 2009, culminating in a crossover video entitled "TGWTG Team Brawl" wherein the characters fight and ultimately reconcile. Earl argues that Walsh’s videos promote anti-trans rhetoric and have not received similar treatment. His early films did not have scripts or rehearsal. Out of character, Rolfe and Walker clarified that the feud was entirely fictional and that they were in fact good friends; both have since collaborated on a number of videos and other projects.


YouTube users say transphobic videos are appearing on their feeds among seemingly unrelated content. However, video shorts reports of users being shown transphobic Shorts are spreading across other social media platforms. But some users are shocked by just how prevalent transphobic content is on Shorts, and how hard it is to get rid of it. In June, Shorts had more than 1.5 billion monthly users. Like TikTok, the Shorts recommendation algorithm feeds content to the user in an endless scroll. Shorts is the default tab in the YouTube app, which means it's the first thing you see when you open it. Bored Shorts TV does all of its own media production out of their studio in Orem, Utah. He is best known for creating and starring in the retrogaming web series Angry Video Game Nerd (2004-present), a joint production between his Cinemassacre Productions, GameTrailers, and ScrewAttack. A new video is produced every Monday. His career as an online celebrity took off in 2004 with the beginning of Angry Video Game Nerd. This show eventually developed into a psychological horror series, while still containing board game reviews in each episode.
